Batteries - Frequently Asked Questions

A guide to common questions about your Neuton Mower battery and charger.

The Neuton Mower comes with a sealed, lead acid Battery already installed at the factory. We offer two types of batteries: 24 volts and 36 volts. The Battery should not leak, regardless of the position in which it is stored. The Battery is completely maintenance free. You never need to add water. However, as with all rechargeable Batteries, after years of use they will eventually need replacement.

With proper care, this Battery should last up to five (5) years. For additional information, please review Chapter 2: Handling the Battery Safely and Chapter 7: Maintaining and Storing Your Neuton Mower in your Owner's Manual.

Before charging the battery, read all instructions and cautionary markings in your Owner's Manual and on your mower. Do not operate your mower until you have read and understand all instructions and the battery is fully charged. Read the safety considerations section of your Owner's Manual before performing any repairs or maintenance.

  • A: Depending on how long the battery is depleted, 12 to 24 hours should be sufficient to fully recharge the battery. Once the battery is fully charged, disconnect the charger from the battery first, then unplug the AC power unit from the outlet. You can charge the battery while it is in the mower or remove it from the mover to charge it. The performance of your mower is the same, regardless of which charging method you choose.

The battery should be recharged after every use and should not be fully discharged. During the seasons when you are using the mower weekly and discharging and charging the battery regularly, we recommend charging the battery to full after each use.
  • A: It is ok to leave the battery charging as long as 24 hours but we do not recommend leaving it charging continuously such as during storage. Despite what the Operator's Manual may indicate, this may actually damage the battery or shorten its life span. Use only the charger supplied with the battery.
  • A: The Red light on the battery and the Green light on the handlebar never change color. They indicate that there is a completed circuit.

When charging the battery, the red light will not shut off or change color but the battery should be fully charged after 12 to 24 hours. The Green light on the handlebar only indicates that the circuit is completed when the battery and Safety Key are installed in the mower.

When both a fully charged battery and the Safety Key are installed in the mower, a green indicator light on the handlebar will glow. This light will not go out or change color when the battery is depleted. It will only go out if you remove the battery or the Safety Key from the mower.
  • A: Under typical mowing conditions, the Battery charge should last for approximately forty-five (45) to sixty (60) minutes per use but this may diminish over time. The length of time depends on the length, density, and dampness of the grass as well as battery charging time and mowing height. If the grass is dense or damp, the battery charge may diminish more quickly. Raising the cutting height and keeping the blade sharp can help to alleviate the load on the battery and motor.

If you generally intend to use your Mower and Trimmer for a longer duration, Neuton, Inc. recommends that you purchase an extra Battery. That way, you could have a second fully charged Battery ready so you can continue mowing.
  • A: Not fully charging the battery before off-season and long term storage can lead to a depleted or dead battery. The battery should not be left charging continuously for months at a time, despite what the Operator's Manual may indicate. This may actually damage the battery or shorten its life span. Like a car battery, the battery will slowly discharge over time if not used and may lose it's charge capacity if left unattended for long periods.

We recommend fully charging the battery prior to long term or off-season storage. 24 hours should be sufficient to fully recharge the battery.

If convenient, recharge the battery once or twice during the off-season, then charge the battery again prior to the first use in the spring. For both off-season and long term storage, do not leave the battery charging continuously.

The battery should be stored in a warm dry environment. Room temperature is ideal. Cold temperature will discharge the battery and may damage it. Always keep the battery in an environment where the temperature remains above 32 degrees F but below 104 degrees F.

Initially the battery should only require 12-24 hours to fully recharge. They should be recharged after every use and should not be fully discharged. As the battery ages, you may need to charge the battery longer, even up to 24 hours. A good time to consider purchasing a replacement battery is when the battery takes longer than 24 hours to charge. During the summer months when you are using the mower weekly and discharging and charging the battery regularly, we recommend charging the battery to full after each use.
